In addition to cultivating professionals in the fields of art and design creation, theory, and arts administration, our department has established a Secondary Education Program (specializing in Visual Arts within the Arts domain and Fine Arts within the Arts domain) to train visual arts teachers for junior high and high schools. We also promote cultural education initiatives to elevate the standard of aesthetic education for the general public, making us a vibrant, dynamic, innovative, and forward-looking department.
Furthermore, the department is located in the historic cultural district of Tainan’s ancient capital, adjacent to the Tainan Museum of Art (opened in 2019), the National Taiwan Literature Museum, the Confucius Temple Cultural Park, the Tainan Blueprint Cultural and Creative Park, and the Tainan Science and Industrial Park. The department’s founding mission is to cultivate talent in the fields of artistic creation, art theory, art education, and arts administration, with a particular emphasis on training visual arts teachers for elementary and secondary schools. It also aims to advance arts and cultural development, promote academic exchanges both domestically and internationally, and elevate the standard of aesthetic education for the general public.
The history of our department is as follows:
In the 39th year of the Republic of China, the school established the Art Teacher Training Program, which ceased accepting new students in August of the 47th year of the Republic of China.
In August of the 51st year of the Republic of China, the school was reorganized into Tainan Normal College (a junior college), and the Art and Crafts Division was established.
In July of the 76th year of the Republic of China, the school was reorganized into the Provincial Tainan Normal College, and the Art and Crafts Division was established within the Department of Elementary Education.
July, the 80th year of the Republic of China: The institution was reorganized as National Tainan Normal College, continuing the existing structure.
August, the 87th year of the Republic of China: The “Department of Art and Craft Education” was established.
The 91st year of the Republic of China: The “Graduate Institute of Visual Arts” was established.
The 91st year of the Republic of China: A secondary school education program was launched to train teachers in the “Arts and Humanities” field.
Republic of China Year 93: The institution was reorganized into a comprehensive university, “National Tainan University,” and the former Department of Art and Craft Education was renamed the “Department of Fine Arts.”
Republic of China Year 95: The Department of Fine Arts comprised both undergraduate and graduate programs (combining the department and graduate institute).
Republic of China Year 95: The “Master’s Program in Visual Arts Education” was established to provide continuing education opportunities for in-service teachers.
Republic of China Year 103: The former Department of Fine Arts was renamed the “Department of Visual Arts and Design”
Republic of China Year 103: The “Master’s Program for In-Service Teachers” was established
Republic of China Year 109: The “Graduate Institute of Animation and Media Design” was merged into the “Department of Visual Arts and Design,” becoming the “Master’s Program in Animation and Media Design, Department of Visual Arts and Design”
In the 113th year of the Republic of China, the “Master’s Program in the Department of Visual Arts and Design” was renamed the “Master’s Program in Visual Arts, Department of Visual Arts and Design”; the “Master’s Program in Animation and Media Design, Department of Visual Arts and Design” was renamed the “Master’s Program in Design, Department of Visual Arts and Design.”
